Your Path to Priceless Memories: Wedding Budget Strategies That Work
Achieve your dream wedding without breaking the bank.
As exciting it is to plan a wedding, they can also be financially daunting. Especially in today’s world where prices are inflated and social media bombards brides with picture-perfect weddings, the pressure to create an equally stunning event can feel overwhelming. However, planning a memorable wedding with a set budget is entirely achievable as long as you make smart decisions along the way. Take a deep breath. I’m here to share with you some tips for budgeting during wedding planning.
Cut your guest count… here’s how:
Trimming down your guest list is one of the most effective ways to reduce wedding expenses. A smaller guest count means less spent on catering, seating, and invitations. This allows you to allocate your budget to other aspects of your special day. Plus, it’ll keep your party more intimate which is always special.
While trimming down your guest list is a widely recognized way to save on wedding expenses, I understand that it's easier said than done. Deciding who makes the cut can be a delicate process, especially when you want to include everyone who's been a part of your life. To help you navigate this challenging task, here are a few practical tips:
Prioritize Your Must-Have Guests: Start by listing the people who are absolutely essential to your big day. Immediate family members, close friends, and those who have played a significant role in your life should top this list.
Set Clear Criteria: Establish criteria for inviting guests. For example, consider whether you've had recent contact with them, if they've met your partner, or if they're an integral part of your life. This can help you make consistent decisions.
Categorize Your List: Divide your guest list into categories like family, friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. This can make it easier to see where you can make cuts without compromising your closest relationships.
Consider Plus-Ones: Be mindful of plus-one invitations. While it's courteous to allow your single guests to bring a date, evaluate whether it's feasible for your budget. Reserve plus-ones for those in long-term relationships or spouses.
Limit Extended Family: If you have a large extended family, consider inviting only close relatives or those you have a strong connection with. You can celebrate with the broader family at a separate gathering later.
Use Tiers: Create a priority tier system for guests. Start with your must-invites and then work down the list, adding guests as space and budget allow.
Communicate Honestly: If you must make tough decisions, the key is to communicate openly with those who may not receive an invitation. Explain your constraints and express your desire to celebrate with them in an alternative way.
Remember, the goal is to make your wedding a reflection of your love and priorities. While cutting the guest list can be challenging, it's an effective way to ensure a more intimate and financially manageable celebration.
Keep your bridal party small
By limiting the number of bridesmaids and groomsmen, you can save on attire, bouquets, and gifts which add up quickly. A smaller bridal party also simplifies logistics and can lead to more intimate and meaningful interactions. I chose to have my three best friends, my sister, and two sister-in-laws. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. It’s already made for such an intimate and special journey with my closest girls standing by my side.
Go Digital
Opting for digital invitations and RSVPs can significantly cut stationery costs. Plus, it's an eco-friendly choice that streamlines the process of managing responses. I’ll admit, I personally love receiving a beautiful paper invitation in the mail. However, most people responded on my Instagram polls that they just save the date in their calendars, send in their RSVP and toss the invitation in the garbage without a second thought.
If you’re looking for a website to do this, I used Greenvelope to create my bachelorette itineraries and loved it:

Bundled Photography & Videography Deals
Look for photographers who offer bundled packages that include engagement sessions or albums. Bundling services, such as photography and videography in one, often results in substantial savings compared to booking them separately. I’m using JoVan Photography, a family owned and operated studio that has captured weddings in Long Island, NYC and NJ for over 40 years. Should you choose to inquire, make sure to mention Lexi Tobin for top notch service!
Cut Back on Bridesmaid Proposal Gifts
Just because you want to get your bridal party cute gifts doesn’t mean you need to spend a ton. Below are some of my top cost-friendly gift ideas for your bridal party:
Hire a DJ over a Band
While live bands can be fantastic, hiring a DJ is generally more budget-friendly. DJs always provide your guests with a lively atmosphere, so the energy will still be just as good! On the fence still? Hire a DJ along with 1 or 2 musicians. I’ve been to few weddings that did this and each time it was both unique and a great blend of talent.
Rent your Jewelry & Accessories
Renting your jewelry for your wedding day is a smart way to save money without sacrificing any style. By choosing to rent, you can adorn yourself with stunning pieces for a fraction of the cost. I am renting my jewelry from Verstolo so I can wear dreamy diamonds for a fraction of the cost! I also have been loving Vivrelle to rent handbags for all of the wedding events - bachelorette, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, etc!
More Candles, Less Florals
Using candles as part of your decor can create an incredibly romantic ambiance while reducing the need for elaborate floral arrangements, which tend to be costly.
Skip the Photo Booth
While photo booths are fun, eliminating this expense can help save on both rental fees and printing costs for photo strips. Another hidden bonus - your guests will spend more time on the dance floor!
Lean on Specialty Cocktails
Limiting the variety of alcoholic beverages offered at your bar to a few signature cocktails can save on drink costs and reduce the need for a full bar setup. However, be careful about limiting the options too much so you don’t disappoint your guests.
Cut Transportation Costs
If possible, choose a venue that allows you to host both the ceremony and reception at the same location. This can eliminate the need for transportation between venues, saving money on transportation services.
Purchase a Wedding Gown from the Sample Rack
Bridal boutiques often have sample racks where you can find stunning wedding dresses at a fraction of the cost. These gowns may have been tried on by other brides but are typically in excellent condition and can be altered to fit you perfectly. You can also lean on brands like Grace Loves Lace which has beautiful gowns for reasonable costs, see below:
Simple Wedding Cake
Opt for a smaller, simpler wedding cake design or consider a dessert bar with a variety of sweet treats as an alternative. This can be more cost-effective than an elaborate tiered cake.
Food Alternatives
Instead of a traditional plated dinner, consider alternatives like buffet-style catering or food stations. These options are often more budget-friendly and can add an interactive element to your reception. If you prefer a seated dinner but are looking to cut back, consider a pasta or chicken dish over a filet or fish.
Consider Choosing Other Days of the Week
Holding your wedding on a day other than Saturday, like a Friday or Sunday, often results in lower venue rental fees and catering costs.
Cut the Brunch
Bid farewell to the big Sunday brunch tradition to not only save on costs but also to spare your guests from the post-wedding hangover blues. Let's face it, saying goodbye is never easy, and waking up early after a night of partying for a hearty Sunday brunch may leave everyone feeling a bit worse for wear. By ditching the brunch, you can end your wedding on a high note. Order room service breakfast in bed or go somewhere special with your immediately family only instead for a more relaxed and budget-friendly brunch.
